To mark the final day of the Shiite Muslim festival of Ashura, boys and men in Kabul flayed their backs with chains and razor blades.
Shiite pilgrims pour into Kerbala and Khadhimiya to mark death of Imam al-Hussein, grandson of Prophet Mohammed, who was slain in the 7th century.

    Interesting, had no idea about this,don't find it all that disturbing, seems more unsanitary, would imagine the clean up would have to be pretty thorough.

    I'm Muslim, so I'll explain what this actually is.
    In some shia regions of Muslim countries such as Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Azerbaijan, Pakistan, Lebanon, and Bahrain, the Commemoration of Husayn ibn Ali has become a national holiday and most ethnic and religious communities participate in it. Even in predominantly Hindu country like India, Ashura (often called Moharram) is a public holiday. India is home to more than 40 to 55 million Shiites. (Wikipedia)

    The violence that occurs is from extremist, like how some Christians blow up abortion clinics, or some Christians (like Westboro), laugh at military funerals. Not all Christians do that, and some find it disgusting, but it does happen.
